IPEDS Faculty Management Occupations Definition

Faculty positions that fall under “Management Occupations” are those dedicated primarily to the management/oversight of policies and programs for a major academic or business unit (MBU), or those who serve in a full-time management role at a central level within that unit (i.e. dean’s office or vice president’s office) and have at least MBU-wide scope in their function. These are generally Asst/Assoc Deans, Deans, Asst/Assoc Vice Provosts, Vice Provosts, Asst/Assoc Vice Presidents, Vice Presidents, etc. However, positions occupied by faculty in “Director” or “Executive Director” roles should be included if they are responsible for academic, operational, and financial oversight of a major business unit (MBU) or if they report directly to a unit head and serve in a full-time leadership role that has MBU-wide scope equivalent to an Asst/Assoc Dean, Asst/Assoc Vice Provost, or Asst/Assoc Vice President. Any equivalencies must be reviewed/approved by the appropriate Vice President’s office.
