Kathy Bassard, Ph.D.
Senior vice provost for faculty affairs
Dr. Katherine Clay Bassard is Professor of English and Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. Prior to serving as senior vice provost, she was interim associate dean for the College of Humanities and Sciences and chair of the Department of English. She joined the VCU English faculty in 1999 from the University of California at Berkeley where she earned tenure in 1998.
She is the author of three books, Spiritual Interrogations: Culture, Gender and Community in Early African American Women’s Writing published by (Princeton University Press in 1999), Transforming Scriptures: African American Women Writers and the Bible (University of Georgia Press 2010) and an edition of Peter Randolph’s Sketches of Slave Life (2016). She has published articles in anthologies and scholarly journals including African American Review, Callaloo, and Religion and Literature. Dr. Bassard has delivered over thirty lectures, papers and presentations during her career including invited lectures at Wheaton College, the University of Virginia, the University of Notre Dame, UCLA and Harvard University. Dr. Bassard’s research interests, African American literature and culture, gender studies and women’s writing, theory of narrative and hermeneutics, all flow from an engagement at the intersection of Literature and Religion as primary sites for human identity and expression.
