Update on REAL experiential learning initiative

Author: Office of the Provost

The steering committee tasked with helping shape VCU's Relevant Experiential and Applied Learning (REAL) initiative have released their findings and recommendations in a new report.

Originally conceptualized thanks in large part to student feedback, REAL represents a conscious effort by the university to build more practical experiences into VCU's curriculum.

Among the highlights of the committee's report include a recommendation that REAL center around four central themes:

  • Serve: activities that incorporate community engagement and service opportunities
  • Discover: activities that closely unite academic goals with a sense of inquiry and exploration
  • Create: activities that encourage innovative, critical thinking as well as collaboration with other disciplines
  • Career: activities that tie student academic goals to authentic, real-world work happening in the field

The report also recommends that the university dedicate the 2017-18 academic year to planning for REAL's implementation, with the official launch of the initiative to come sometime after that.
