Streamlined processes: academic program development and approval

In an effort to streamline processes, provide transparency, and enhance service to academic units, the Office of Academic Affairs is undergoing updates to its policies and practices. The first enhancement is the processes for revisions to programs of study. Specifically, the process for developing new degree proposals and certificate programs, modifying programs of study, and making organizational changes in academic units has been updated. These streamlined processes reinforce VCU’s commitment to academic integrity while maximizing efficiency for proposal development and approval.
All processes align with requirements of the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).
The Office of Academic Affairs has outlined the steps in the development and approval process as well as provided operational definitions for the following:
- New Degrees, Spin-Off Degrees and Certificates of Advanced Graduate Study Proposals
- Certificate Program Proposals
- Substantial Modified Program Proposal
- Simple Modified Program Proposal
- Complex Organizational Change
- Simple Organizational Change
