Provost Weekly Update: April 1, 2016
Provost updates, Faculty
This week's update highlights the outstanding work of our faculty.
Last week we welcomed the VCU Board of Visitors (BOV) to the Monroe Park Campus for their quarterly meeting. Our board members, who are appointed by the governor, represent the public, private and independent sectors and share a passion for higher education in general and VCU, specifically. They spend several weeks preparing for these tightly scheduled, full-day meetings that include with both action and information items of significance to the university writ large.
Having worked at several major public universities prior to joining VCU last year, I have seen repeatedly the challenges associated with engaging governing boards during their busy meetings with the day-to-day work of faculty. But, last week, the work of VCU faculty took center stage.
At my request, the VCU Faculty Senate selected two programs to highlight that showcased interdisciplinary, cross-campus programs that provide a snapshot of the outstanding work of faculty – from concept and research to teaching and translation. Following the presentations, teams of faculty members from each program led discussions with the board members to provide further insight. These luncheon presentations and discussions were both engaging and impressive. Many thanks to the faculty teams presenting the Standardized Patient Program and the Interprofessional Virtual Geriatrics Case.
Clearly, these are only two of overwhelming number of faculty success stories at VCU. Although we can’t highlight all of them at BOV meetings, the Division of University Relations does a tremendous job in keeping both the VCU and external community informed. If you haven’t already, I urge you to visit VCU News and explore the many notable achievements of our faculty.
